This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).
In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $76,135 to $104,709. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year with the possibility of extension.
Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and residents). Position Summary
The Academic Development Officer (ADO) drives faculty development, mentorship, and promotion & tenure support within the Department of Medicine. Reporting to the Academic Department Manager and working closely with the Chair’s office and the Education & Faculty Development leadership, the ADO is the first point of contact for new academic faculty and leads orientation, mentorship matching, development curricula, third-year reviews, and promotion/tenure workflows. The role also stewards recognition events, continuous learning opportunities, and Access, Community + Belonging (ACB) initiatives that advance an inclusive academic community.
Requirements
Post-secondary degree.
Demonstrated excellence in professional writing, editing, summarizing and, abridging other written works required.
Knowledge of and commitment to Access, Community + Belonging principles.
Strong interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with faculty mentors, committee members, and community collaborators.
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills; exceptional attention to detail, organizational ability, and follow-through.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office; PeopleSoft experience is an asset.
Familiarity with U of A policies and procedures, the Academic Collective Agreement, and FoMD FEC guidelines.
Experience designing and evaluating academic development programming (e.g., orientation, mentorship, P&T workshops).
Event coordination (sessions, awards, celebrations) and survey design/analysis experience.
Responsibilities
Orientation & Onboarding: Build and update orientation materials; coordinate sessions; analyze newcomer feedback to improve resources.
Mentorship Program: Maintain mentor/mentee database and matching; recruit and support mentors; deliver resources and touchpoints; lead periodic program evaluations.
Faculty Development Curriculum: Plan and run workshops (e.g., tenure & promotion, instructional design); secure facilitators; manage logistics, attendance, and improvement cycles.
Promotion & Third-Year Review: Set timelines; manage Academic Evaluation Committee processes; coordinate external assessments; draft Chair briefing notes and letters; maintain web content.
Access, Community + Belonging (ACB): Provide coordination support to ACB leadership and embed ACB principles across ADO activities.
Career Development Awards & Celebrations: Run annual calls, coordinate adjudication and communications, and partner on promotion celebrations.
Program Evaluation & Reporting: Design surveys, synthesize participation data, identify gaps, and recommend improvements for decision-making.
Budget & Planning: Manage an annual budget and contribute to departmental strategic planning and reporting.
