Working for the Department of Computing Science

Founded in 1964, the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is the oldest and one of the largest computing science departments in Canada. We have an international reputation for contributions in the many fields of computing, both in foundations and applications.

The Department currently consists of 51 faculty members, approximately 326 graduate students, 20 post-doctoral fellows and research associates, 1,352 undergraduate students and 12 administrative staff. Our research partners come from a wide variety of industries and other academic disciplines.

Position Summary

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a research position supervised by Dr. Alona Fyshe, and affiliated with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. The focus of the project is on the intersection of neuroscience and large language models.  There have been multiple recent papers highlighting the intersection of language modeling and the human brain’s processing of language.  This postdoc will continue this stream of research by:

  • training large language models,
  • developing behavioral and neuroimaging experiments, and
  • collecting and analyzing neuroimaging data (EEG, fMRI).  

We are also expanding our current work into developmental cognitive science via collaborations with international collaborators.

Requirements

PhD in computing science or a related area, with a focus on machine learning, NLP, large language models and/or neuroimaging
Evidence of high-quality research, such as publications in relevant top-tier conferences (ICLR, NeurIPS, *ACL, EMNLP, ICML, etc) and/or journals.
Effective communicator in both written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in decoding/encoding models for neuroimaging is an asset
Previous experience in collecting and analysing neuroimaging data is an asset

Work with and potentially co-supervise students
(Co)-write high-impact scientific publications
Present your work at top-tier conferences
