Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

Working for the Department of Computing Science
Founded in 1964, the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is the oldest and one of the largest computing science departments in Canada. We have an international reputation for contributions in the many fields of computing, both in foundations and applications. The Department currently consists of 51 faculty members, over 300 graduate students, 20 post-doctoral fellows and research associates, over 1300 undergraduate students and 12 administrative staff. Our research partners come from a wide variety of industries and other academic disciplines.
Position
The Foundations of Robust and Trustworthy Machine Learning (FORT) lab led by Prof Nidhi Hegde has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The FORT lab focuses on a fundamental approach to developing robust and trustworthy algorithms for machine learning. This largely applies to notions of privacy and fairness, but also to more general concepts of robustness and stability. Applications range from supervised learning to bandits to language models to image segmentation. The current open position is for a project on Distributionally Robust Optimization as applied to these themes.
The selected candidate will be hosted in the FORT lab, in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Requirements
The Research Associate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. It is an expectation that the Research Associate will be currently engaged in equity-oriented research. A graduate degree (PhD preferred) in a related discipline such as: sociology, political science, women’s studies, Indigenous studies, community health or public health. The successful candidate must have a proven record of research accomplishment.
Additional requirements for this position are as follows:
Excellent communication (English oral and written), interpersonal, organizational and time management skills;
Very strong oral and written skills in English are required;
Proven ability to establish and maintain research partnerships with diverse organizations and professionals.
Excellent computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Office, and Internet applications;
Proven experience with various research methods (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods);
Experience working under short time lines, with proven ability to adhere to strict schedules and deadlines;
Valid driver’s license.
Experience working with First Nations organizations
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of critical theory, anti-racism theory, postcolonial theory and/or Indigenous research methods will be an asset.
Experience utilizing ethnography, participant observation or other observational research methods will be an asset.
Strong command of a statistical software package programming language: such as SAS, SPSS, and/or STATA is an asset.
Experience in community-based research is an assent.
Experience mentoring and supervising junior researchers is an asset.
Familiarity with UofA administrative structure and UAPPOL policies and procedures pertaining to research would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities
Plans and coordinates the initiation of research study protocols, and the establishment of operating policies and procedures, ensuring that all are compliant with University guidelines and policies, TCPS2, and research agreements with project partners.
Prepares research ethics board applications and amendments as required.
Conducts qualitative and/or observational data collection.
Prepares proposals for new research activities, including assisting the Principal
Investigator in preparing research grant applications and contract proposals;
Assists in the preparation of data for presentations and the writing and revision of research manuscripts and reports;
Creates and coordinates virtual and in-person workshops and committee meetings;
Supervises Research Assistants;
Conducts related administrative duties at a managerial level including human resource, budget reconciliation
