Senior Applied Scientist - China
Microsoft is seeking a Senior Applied Scientist to innovate and deliver AI-powered experiences in Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. As part of the Office AI team, you’ll design and deploy machine learning models, particularly LLMs and multimodal systems, at a massive scale. Your work will span the full lifecycle: from prototype to production, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and measurable user impact. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with PMs and engineers, build robust evaluation systems, and contribute to Microsoft’s responsible AI commitments. Requirements
1. Bachelor's + 4 years OR Master's + 3 years OR PhD + 1 year in ML, AI, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
2. 4+ years applied ML/NLP experience, including production deployments
3. 2+ years customer-facing, project-delivery, or consulting experience
4. Strong Python + PyTorch skills
5. Experience with SDLC practices (CI/CD, testing, performance profiling)
6. Familiarity with experimentation, A/B testing, and evaluation metrics
7. Proven ability to ship ML solutions with PM/engineering collaboration
8. Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check
Preferred:
9. Graduate degree (MS/PhD) in ML/AI or equivalent applied experience
10. Strong LLM/transformer knowledge (SFT, RLHF, RAG, safety tooling)
11. Experience with:
• Production ML (model optimization, APIs, caching, microservices)
• Data engineering (ETL, vector indexing, Azure AI Search, FAISS)
• Observability & on-call practices (SLIs/SLOs, tracing, dashboards)
• Azure ML, Kubernetes, containerization, policy enforcement
• Security/privacy in enterprise SaaS contexts
